In Ayurveda, Memecylon umbellatum, commonly known as Kayamboo, finds diverse applications. Its leaves serve as a cooling astringent, beneficial for conjunctivitis and internal use in leucorrhoea and gonorrhea. A lotion made from the leaves is used to address eye troubles and is also believed to possess antiviral properties. Traditionally, the leaves and bark are applied to bruises, and the leaves yield a yellow dye used in the dyeing industry. Additionally, the leaves were utilized for snakebites, and the fruits are known for their pulpy, astringent, and edible nature. The paste of leaves aids in treating herpes, while the decoction of the roots and preparation from the bark are used for treating menorrhagia and bruises, respectively. The seeds are employed as a cough remedy and sedative, and the leaf powder is used for diabetes treatment. The hard and heavy wood of Memecylon umbellatum is traditionally used for crafting light axe handles and walking sticks. Moreover, the root decoction is employed for excessive menstrual discharge, and in Dakshin Kannada District, it serves as a spasmolytic, administered to small children. Memecylon umbellatum showcases a rich array of therapeutic uses in Ayurvedic medicine.
